How To Measure Something in a Picture?

Are you familiar with inch tape? Well, we all might be because each one of us has gone for the tailor measurements at some point. But, what if we need to measure something in a photo? What if we need to know the length of something from a photo online? Now, with this, a question pops up— can I measure something in a picture?

The answer is YES, you can! Astonishing, huh? If you don’t know how— do not worry. We will familiarize you with the technique to do that. In this technique, no scale, no inch tape, and no pencil is required!

A lot has been said now, so without further ado, let’s comprehend how to take measurements from photos.

How To Take Measurements From Photo?

Taking measurements from a photo may seem daunting at first, but if done right it will seem like a breeze. We will take measurements from pictures using Photo Measure.

Important Note About Photo Measure

It’s easy to determine the measurements of single plains like distances on maps or technical drawings such as architectural plans of floors only when you have its scale and ruler. However, the photos are a 2-dimensional projection of the 3-dimensional world. As we all know, the object’s distance and size are inversely proportional, i.e., objects appear smaller with increasing distance. This is called perspective. As a result, it is nearly impossible to tell whether it’s a small object nearby or a large one far away without any additional information. But, with Photo Measure, we can turn this impossible into a possible venture.

Nevertheless, remember, a reference object for scale must be on the same image plane as the object being measured, meaning it must be nearby and at the same distance from the camera to calculate an object’s size from a single image. Furthermore, distortions are produced by camera lenses (think fish-eye vision). Thus, anticipate that this approach can be used only for estimates as the accuracy depends very much on the image.

Now, as we have equipped ourselves with what to expect from Photo Measure, let’s finally hop onto how to measure with it.

Taking Measurements From A Photo Online In 3 Simple Steps

Step 1: Set the scale by drawing the first line. Just click and drag, drag endpoints to adjust. The first line will appear in Red.
Step 2: Draw another line along the item you wish to measure, this line will appear in Green.
Step 3: Now, enter the known dimension. Draw more lines to measure other parts of the image.

*The objects should be close to one other for optimal accuracy.

Detailed Instructions To Measure Something In A Photo

To measure something in a photo check the detailed version of using Photo Measure.

  • Open an image or drag it and drop it anywhere on the Photo Measure page. The image will be resized to match the width of the page.
  • To see a larger view expand the editor.
  • If you need, rotate the image. Remember the measurement lines can’t be rotated with the image.
  • Create the reference dimension (red) by click-and-dragging the first measurement line onto an object with a known size.
  • Input the first dimension’s actual length as a reference; the other measures will be adjusted accordingly.
  • Click and drag to draw measurement lines (green); to delete them, click the “remove” link in the measurements table.
  • Using the corresponding buttons, save the annotated image and the measurement data, or right-click the image and select “Save Image As…”

Tips For Taking Measurements From A Photo Using Photo Measure

  • Adjust a line by using an endpoint.
  • Click DEL to remove the last measurement.
  • Remove any measurements using the measurements table.
  • Press ESC to clear all measurements or just abort drawing the current line.
  • Hit ESC twice in one second to clear the image.
  • Hold CTRL while dragging to “snap” horizontal/vertical lines.
  • Even if you enter units in the scales it’ll not affect the measurements. It’ll show up in the results.
  • Remember, pixel measurements will be off for scaled images. So, leave the scale empty if you want to measure pixels.

Wrapping Up!

Now, you are equipped with the answer to how to measure something in a picture. So, why wait? Try Photo Measure now and have fun exploring. But remember, it will give you estimates and the accuracy majorly depends on the image you are measuring.
